To honor the illustrious career of Joseph Flaherty,
Rensselaer’s recently retired dean of the School of Science,
Martin Schoffstall ’82 has made a $100,000 challenge gift
commitment to establish the “Dr. Joseph E.
Flaherty Lecture Series” in the Computer Science Department at
Rensselaer. Schoffstall will use his commitment to match gifts
from alumni, friends, and colleagues of Flaherty up to
$100,000. Rensselaer President Shirley Ann Jackson announced
this initiative at a recent campus reception for Flaherty. To
kick off the challenge, President Jackson announced her own
$20,000 commitment to the Flaherty Lecture Series.
Each year the income from the endowment will be used to
invite pre-eminent computer scientists to give a general
campuswide lecture to the student body, or a seminar of a more
specialized nature to the members of the computer science
department.
Flaherty joined Rensselaer in 1972 and provided
distinguished service as the Amos Eaton Professor of Computer
Science, the founding chair of the Department of Computer
Science, and dean of the School of Science.
