Rensselaer’s Data Warehouse Group was one of 100
organizations recognized by International Data Group’s (IDG)
InfoWorld, the leading integrated media brand for IT
solutions management, as a winner of its InfoWorld 100
awards. The annual awards honor IT projects that demonstrate
the most creative use of cutting-edge technologies to further
their business goals.
“The Data Warehouse Project has allowed Rensselaer to
significantly improve consistency and access to Institute
information. This has contributed to improved planning,
forecasting, and decision-making processes for various campus
constituencies,” said John Kolb ’79, Rensselaer’s chief
information officer. “InfoWorld’s recognition of Rensselaer’s
Data Warehouse initiatives is very gratifying for the entire
Rensselaer community of individuals who have worked so hard on
this project. This is the second national award garnered by the
Data Warehouse Project that recognizes the transformative
nature of IT and process improvement throughout the
Institute.”
Nominations were submitted by InfoWorld readers,
technology partners, and end-user companies in late summer. To
be considered, projects must stretch beyond the typical,
off-the-shelf solution, and must use multiple technologies in
innovative ways to serve well-defined business goals.
“It’s been said that fortune favors the bold. The
inspiration for this year’s finalists to tackle such sweeping
changes varies widely — from reducing delivery time of products
and services to replacing cumbersome legacy systems,” said
Richard Gincel, InfoWorld senior editor. “But
regardless of the motivation, high ambition unites them
all.”
Rensselaer, along with the Open Source Lab at Oregon State
University, Salisbury University, University of Northern
Colorado, University of Pittsburgh, and the University of
Wisconsin-Milwaukee, were honored in the Education category.
Other categories included: Computing/Tech, Distribution/Supply
Chain, Financial Services, Government, and Healthcare, among
others. To view a complete list of winners and additional

“We are particularly honored to be named among the 100
companies that have made the best use of technology to enhance
their business,” said Ora Fish, program manager for the Data
Warehouse Project. “Our success was driven by the overall
strategy of building an excellent data warehouse infrastructure
while ensuring a new set of processes and skills to go with it.
This broad-reaching impact required strong commitment from the
university leadership and a successful collaboration of various
academic schools and administrative portfolios such as Finance,
DotCIO, HR, Provost, Enrollment, VP of Research, Student Life,
and IA.”
