On March 27, Rensselaer’s Center for Initiatives In
Pre-College Education (CIPCE) sponsored an event at the
Legislative Office Building in downtown Albany. Titled
“Rensselaer’s Engineers of Tomorrow: a Robotics Showcase,” the
event provided an opportunity to demonstrate the various
robotics projects that the group has been developing with area
schools and community organizations.
The program included LEGO and VEX robotics competitions and
a FIRST robot on display. More than 40 middle and high school
students from the Albany, Troy, Rensselaer, and Shenendehowa
school districts and the Troy Boys and Girls Club participated
in the event, along with several Rensselaer undergraduate
students who currently serve as mentors for each of the
teams.
Launched 11 years ago, CIPCE works with area K-12 teachers
and students, as well as local, statewide, and national
organizations, to promote the use of robotics and other
technologies in the classroom. Since its inception, a series of
professional development, academic, and after-school programs
have been created. The workshops provide an opportunity for
teachers and students to see and experience cutting-edge
technologies in robotics engineering, computer-aided design
(CAD) software, robotic arm systems, and rapid prototyping
technology, among other things. For more information about
CIPCE, go to http://www.cipce.rpi.edu/.
The showcase was coordinated through Assemblyman Ronald
Canestrari’s office. Canestrari is the chairman of the
Assembly’s Higher Education Committee.
