Farewell Reception for Ken Ralph, Aug. 14
Rensselaer students, faculty, and staff are invited
to attend a farewell reception to honor Ken Ralph, director of
athletics, in appreciation for his outstanding dedication to
Rensselaer for the past five years. The reception will take
place in the Rensselaer Union “Welcome Lobby” that is located
on the Sage Avenue side from 3 to 5 p.m. Rensselaer recently
announced that Athletic Director Ken Ralph will resign from the
post he has held since 2002 in order to accept the position of

Cisco IP Telephone System Maintenance, Aug. 14
The Division of Information Technologies
Infrastructure at Rensselaer will conduct maintenance on the
Cisco IP Telephone system on Tuesday, Aug. 14 from 8 to 11 p.m.
During this time period, callers may experience intermittent
loss of some IP telephone services (calling, call forwarding,
and phone directories). However, the IBX telephone system and
the campus voicemail system will continue to function. For more

International Students and Scholars Orientation

The Office for International Students and Scholars

LabVIEW Hands-On Workshop, Aug. 21
Rensselaer students, faculty, and staff are invited to
participate in a free, three-hour LabVIEW seminar. The workshop
will take place on Tuesday, Aug. 21 from 1 to 4 p.m. in the
Voorhees Computing Center (VCC) North. The session will provide
participants with the opportunity to learn how to build
measurement and control applications using National
Instrument’s LabVIEW graphical programming. Participants will
work through various examples and hands-on exercises. For more

Cyberinfrastructure, Institutions, and
Sustainability Lecture, Aug. 23
The Division of the Chief Information Officer invites
members of the Rensselaer campus community to attend a lecture
being presented by Christopher J. Mackie, Ph.D., of the Andrew
W. Mellon Foundation on the subject of “Cyberinfrastructure,
Institutions, and Sustainability.” The program will take place
on Thursday, Aug. 23 from 10 to 11 a.m. in the Bruggeman
Conference Center in the Center for Biotechnology and
Interdisciplinary Studies. A computational modeler and social
complexity theorist by training, Mackie has also published in
the fields of regulatory theory, social research methods, and
energy, education, and health policy. Last year, Rensselaer
received a Mellon Award for Technology Collaboration (MATC) to
support the continued development of Rensselaer’s Open Source
Bedework calendar system. MATC honors universities and other
not-for-profit organizations who demonstrate leadership in the
collaborative development of open source software tools with
particular application to higher education and not-for-profit

Save the Date: Groundbreaking Ceremony for the East
Campus Athletic Village, Aug. 26
Rensselaer students, faculty, staff, family members,

“Microsoft Outlook 2007 Level 1” Workshop, Aug 28
Rensselaer’s Division of Human Resources will host a
workshop titled “Microsoft Outlook 2007 Level 1” on Tuesday,
Aug. 28 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The program will take place at
the Folsom Library PC Lab located on the first floor. The
workshop will teach introductory/moderate level Microsoft
Outlook 2007 functionality concepts and is part of Rensselaer’s
Microsoft Office Specialist Certification Pilot Program. The
workshop will be facilitated by a Microsoft Certified Trainer
from Computer Visions, one of Rensselaer’s Professional
Development technology partners. Registration is required. In

Enabled Discovery and Innovation” Colloquy, Sept. 7
Rensselaer President Shirley Ann Jackson, Ph.D.,

attend a colloquy titled “The Future of Computationally Enabled
Discovery and Innovation.” The program will be held on Friday,
Sept. 7, beginning at 10:30 a.m. in the Center for

Arden L. Bement Jr., Ph.D., director, National Science
Foundation; John E. Kelly III, Ph.D., senior vice president and

director, Office of Science and Technology Policy; and Charles
M. Vest, Ph.D., president, National Academy of Engineering. The
Colloquy will be followed by a Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony for the
Computational Center for Nanotechnology Innovations (CCNI) at
noon with special guest – The Honorable Joseph L. Bruno, NYS

Call for Volunteers: Navigating Rensselaer &
Beyond 2007
The Office of the First-Year Experience (FYE) is
seeking Rensselaer students, faculty, and staff interested in
volunteer opportunities for the Navigating Rensselaer &
Beyond (NRB) 2007 program. The program will be
held Aug. 21-26. NRB is a five-day program for first-year
students that includes a variety of activities designed to get
students connected to Rensselaer through building affinity
groups and providing opportunities for students to connect with
the greater community of Rensselaer and Troy. For the entire
day on Wednesday, Aug. 22, students self-select into an
activity according to their interests. Many of the activities
will occur on campus and others will take students off campus

Call for Volunteers: Communiversity Welcome Fest,
Aug. 24
The Dean of Students Office is seeking Rensselaer
students, faculty, and staff interested in volunteer
opportunities to help welcome members of the Class of 2011. The
office is seeking individuals to assist during the annual
Communiversity Welcome Fest for the new first year students
that will be held on Friday, Aug. 24 at Riverfront Park in
downtown Troy. The rain site is the Alumni Sports &
Recreation Center. Volunteer opportunities are available form 3
to 9 p.m. Projects include decorating, managing inflatable
activities, blowing up ballons, face painting, among others.
Each volunteer will receive a Communiversity souvenir. For more

Parking Office Update: Staffing Parking Gates
To promote pedestrian safety on the core campus, the
parking gates will be staffed to help implement a new traffic
route for deliveries. Between the hours of 7:45 a.m. to 5
p.m., vehicular traffic entering or moving on the core campus
will be prohibited for 15-minute periods between quarter to the
hour and the hour. For more information, or should

Student Parking Notice for 2007-2008
Attention Rensselaer students: All current student
permits will expire on Aug. 31. Students may process parking
registration online using the Online Parking Services at http://www.rpi.edu/dept/parking/online_svcs.html
or in person at the Parking Office located in the Public Safety
Building. Parking permits should be picked up at the
Public Safety Building upon return to campus for the fall
semester. Please allow 5 business days from time of on-line
registration.
Please note for students using the North Lot and Parking
Garage only: if you are registering a vehicle from last year
for either of these areas and you currently have a transponder
on your vehicle, please leave the transponder in place. The
transponder can be re-programmed from the Parking Office.
If you are registering a different vehicle this year, please
inform the office so that they can program a new transponder.

Public Safety Transportation Schedule and Parking
Changes for the Summer Break
Rensselaer students, faculty, and staff, please note
the following transportation schedule and parking changes for
the summer break. The changes are as follows:
- The Red Hawk Shuttle will not operate during the summer
from May to Aug. 24. The regular Red Hawk Shuttle schedule
will resume operation on Monday, Aug. 27. In addition, the 86
RPI Shuttle will not operate from May to Aug. 24. The 86
Shuttle will resume operation on Sunday Aug. 26. Please note,
all other CDTA routes will operate on a regular
schedule.
- The Downtown Shuttle will continue to operate. Please
call (518) 470-3397 or (518) 276-6616 to make arrangements.
If possible, scheduling at least a day in advance is
appreciated.
- During the summer, Houston Field House, “EH” or “RH”
permit holders may park in the yellow striped sections of the
North Lot. The parking gates will be in the open position for
the summer.
Rensselaer Union Shelnutt Gallery Photo
Exhibit
The Rensselaer Union Shelnutt Gallery will feature
the works of Dan Udell ’57 throughout the summer until Aug. 31.
The exhibit focuses on his photographs of gardens. The title of
the show is “A Celebration of the Garden,” which displays in
vivid color many gardens from around the world, including
Regent’s Park and Green Park in London; Monet’s Garden at
Giverny, France; the Borghese Gardens in Rome, as well as
stunning views of 19th century mansion gardens along
our own Hudson River, starting at Wave Hill, the northwest
Bronx, the home of Mark Twain, Teddy Roosevelt, and conductor
Arturo Toscanini – finishing with a very British looking view
of the Clermont Mansion amid lilac blooms, not to mention an
iris-ringed pond at the Vanderbilt Mansion in Hyde Park, New
York. Udell also traveled to the cities of Cuernavaca and
Puebla, Mexico, this year in search of different garden

Rensselaer Union Post Office Temporary
Location
The Rensselaer Union Post Office has moved to a
temporary location. The Post Office will be located in the
Rensselaer Union Game area. The new hours will be Monday to

Center for Communication Practices
For many, writing can be a daunting task. In an
effort to assist undergraduate and graduate students,
Rensselaer’s Center for Communication Practices is an available
resource to assist students in the process of completing final
papers and presentations. The office is located in the lower
level of Folsom Library. The hours of operation are Mondays and
Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesdays from noon to 8 p.m.,
and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information,

Student Health Center Summer Hours
Rensselaer’s Student Health Center will begin summer
hours this month. The center will be open Monday to Friday from
8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and closed on the weekends. To schedule an

medical emergency, contact Rensselaer’s Public Safety
department at (518) 276-6611 or go directly to the Samaritan
Hospital Emergency Department. Please note, emergency coverage
is subject to your insurance plans limitations. In addition,

Hospitality Services Campus Dining and Renovation
Schedule for the Summer
If you’re planning on eating on campus, here’s the
latest schedule for your summer dining options:
- The Folsom Library Café’s regular hours of operation will
be Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
- Java ++ (campus coffee house) will be open Monday through
Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3
p.m., and closed on Sundays. Java++ will offer $1 iced coffee
specials every Wednesday.

The Rensselaer Union McNeil Room will remain open
throughout the summer. The hours of operation will be
Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Check the

- The Rensselaer Union will offer evening dining services
in the McNeil Room from Monday through Thursday each
week.
Defensive Driving Courses at Rensselaer
Thinking about enhancing your driving skills?
Rensselaer’s Division of Human Resources in collaboration with
Rensselaer’s Department of Public Safety will offer a series of
National Safety Council endorsed Defensive Driving courses. The
courses are offered as part of Rensselaer’s Wellness Program
initiatives and are designed to elevate participant’s awareness
of driving hazards and provide skills that will enable drivers
to prevent automobile collisions.
Rensselaer’s Public Safety instructors are certified by the
National Safety Council. Participants that successfully
complete the course are eligible for the New York State Point
and Insurance Reduction program. For more information regarding

There is a $35 fee for the course to cover material costs and
the instructor’s time. The Division of Human Resources, as part

Save the Date: NanoBiotech 2007 Conference Sept.

Rensselaer will host a special one-day conference
titled NanoBiotech 2007 on Monday, Sept. 17. The event will be
held in the Center for Biotechnology and Interdisciplinary
Studies. The program will highlight cutting-edge R&D and
explore commercialization opportunities of nanotechnology,
biotechnology and related science and engineering fields. The
program is the fourth conference since 2004 in a series of
international conferences pertaining to nanotechnology and
biotechnology.
The multidisciplinary program will offer networking
opportunities to researchers from industry, government and
academia; engineers; physicians; ethicists; environmental
scientists; intellectual property practitioners; lawyers;
business professionals; technology transfer specialists, policy
