Rensselaer To Close North Hall and E-Complex Student Residences

November 14, 2014

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute is closing North Hall and E-Complex student residences.

All students currently living in these residence halls are being provided incentives to remain on campus during the next academic year, including financial inducement and priority housing selection.

Rensselaer has ample, and quality, housing for all juniors and seniors who desire to live on campus. Information on all campus housing options, and the many advantages to on campus living is available on the Residence Life web site, http://reslife.rpi.edu.

Students who are presently living in North Hall and E-Complex and desire to return to on campus housing next year will be afforded two incentives:

  1. All returning students from North Hall and E-Complex choosing to house elsewhere on campus in 2015-2016 will be provided the same housing rate for the upcoming academic year, after inflationary increases, that they are currently paying to live in North Hall and E-Complex.
  2. All returning North Hall and E-Complex students will be provided a very high priority in housing selection for the upcoming academic year, 2015-2016.

Rensselaer plans to continue to invest in ongoing renovations and upgrades of the residence halls on campus. In 2012 the relocation of married students to the new City Station South facilitated the renovation of Bryckwyck and RAHP B and the subsequent addition of 227 beds to the Institute’s undergraduate housing capacity. This additional undergraduate capacity was designed to increase the overall quality of student housing needed to meet demand as well as provide Rensselaer with the capacity to close residence halls as warranted.

In addition to Bryckwyck and RAHP B, Rensselaer has recently completed work to upgrade RAHP A and made interior improvements to the Colonie Apartments. In 2016 the Institute will begin a multi-year project to renovate and upgrade the interior of the Quad, continuing work started this year to repair and upgrade the Quad roofs. The future of the North Hall and E-Complex buildings and their potential future reuse and deployment will be incorporated into the Institute’s Long Range Facilities Master Plan.

Promoting and protecting the Rensselaer student residential experience is a top priority. This step is being taken with that sole purpose.
