Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology Bestows Awards
The Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology conferred a
series of awards and honors at their annual Commencement
Luncheon on May 20, 2005.
The Walter H. Bauer Doctoral Prize in Chemistry was awarded
to Benjamin Falk. This prize goes to a doctoral candidate who
has an exceptional graduate record, has carried out meritorious
doctoral thesis research, and shows outstanding promise in the
field of chemistry.
The Merck Index Award went to Ayse Dinc. This award goes to
the chemistry senior with the highest grade point average.
The William Pitt Mason Prize was awarded to Kathleen
Opper. This prize goes to the chemistry senior who has
demonstrated outstanding academic work and gives promise of
outstanding success in his or her professional chemistry
career. A senior thesis is a major criterion for this
award.
Ayse Dinc also received the John and Mark Cloke prize,
awarded to a graduating senior in chemistry who is continuing
in a graduate school in chemistry, medicine, or biological
science, and who has made a distinguished record, especially in
the department.
The Slezak Memorial Fellowship was awarded to Fikri Avci.
This fellowship is awarded to a third or fourth year student in
chemistry who has shown exceptional performance in academics
and research.
The Dr. Johanna Maas Chemistry Teaching Assistant Award went
to Xiaodun Mou and Kyung Seok Oh. This award is presented to
one or more graduate students for outstanding service in the
teaching program. It was established by Sonja Krause, Class of
1954, and others in memory of Dr. Johanna Zelie Maas, chemist,
physician, Holocaust survivor, and humanitarian.
