Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) AI expert Jim Hendler, Ph.D., Tetherless World Senior Constellation Professor of Computer, Web, and Cognitive Science has received the 2025 AAAI Feigenbaum Prize, one of the most prestigious honors in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). Hendler is recognized for his groundbreaking contributions to knowledge representation, planning, and the Semantic Web.

The award, presented annually by the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI), is given to individuals who have demonstrated a sustained record of high-impact, seminal contributions to AI research.

"RPI is proud of Jim and his outstanding contributions to artificial intelligence. His expertise and leadership help position RPI at the forefront of AI research and education. Looking ahead, we are advancing innovation in AI, quantum computing, and semiconductor research—key areas that drive technological breakthroughs, economic growth, and scientific progress in New York State and beyond,” said RPI Provost Rebecca Doerge, Ph.D.

Hendler’s work at RPI has significantly shaped the development of AI, particularly in the areas of the Semantic Web and knowledge representation. At RPI, Hendler directs the Future of Computing Research Collaboration (FCRC), a member of the IBM AI Horizons Network, that is dedicated to advancing the science of AI and enabling the use of AI and machine learning. Hendler has overseen efforts to develop AI technologies that improve system interpretability, reasoning, and decision-making. The FCRC, under his leadership, continues to apply AI to practical domains such as healthcare, autonomous systems, and robotics, while ensuring that transparency and ethical considerations remain central to its research. Additionally, Hendler's work in data governance and open data, particularly through the Tetherless World Constellation, has influenced the development of frameworks that enhance data accessibility and interoperability. His leadership at RPI has made the institute a hub for AI research that not only drives technological innovation but also addresses the societal and ethical implications of AI.

"I am truly honored to receive the AAAI Feigenbaum Prize, an award that holds great significance given my deep respect for the legacy of Ed Feigenbaum and his transformative contributions to AI,” said Hendler. “He has been a mentor and colleague for more than 30 years, and receiving this honor in his name is thus extra meaningful. Additionally, his recognition is particularly important as it acknowledges the impact of the work we are doing at RPI and in the broader AI community."

A pioneer of the Semantic Web, Hendler has authored over 450 publications on Open Data, AI, and data governance. Hendler served as the former Chief Scientist at DARPA’s Information Systems Office and received the US Air Force Exceptional Civilian Service Medal in 2002. He was the first computer scientist on Science’s Board of Reviewing Editors and contributed to the US government’s data.gov initiative. He has held advisory roles with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, New York State, and national research committees, and is a fellow of multiple esteemed organizations, including the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), BCS, and Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the US National Academy of Public Administration.
