Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) is proud to announce a special event celebrating the life and legacy of one of RPI alumnus Garnet Douglass Baltimore 1881, a pioneering civil engineer, landscape architect, and the first African American graduate of RPI. A visionary in his field, Baltimore made lasting contributions to the Troy community through his innovative infrastructure projects and the design of some of the city’s most cherished landscapes. In recognition of his achievements, a New York State Historical Marker will be unveiled in his honor.

A native of Troy, Baltimore’s influence can still be seen throughout the city. As a civil engineer, he played a key role in the development of Oakwood Cemetery, designing its pathways and structures with remarkable foresight. His work as a landscape architect also led to the creation of Troy’s beloved Prospect Park, a green space that continues to bring the community together more than a century later. Baltimore’s impact extends beyond his designs - he paved the way for future engineers and scholars, embodying the spirit of innovation and perseverance that defines RPI.

“We are proud to join RPI in honoring the incredible legacy of Garnet Douglass Baltimore—the first African American RPI graduate, a trailblazer, and a true son of Troy,” said Troy Mayor Carmella Mantello. “His groundbreaking work as a civil engineer and landscape architect helped shape the very fabric of our city, and his enduring contributions continue to inspire generations. The unveiling of this New York State Historical Marker is a fitting tribute to a man whose vision and determination paved the way for progress - not just in Troy, but across our nation.”

"Garnet Baltimore was a true trailblazer whose work in civil engineering and landscape architecture continues to shape the city of Troy today,” said Chris Letchford, Ph.D., professor and department head of Civil and Environmental Engineering at RPI. “His dedication to innovative design and community enhancement serves as an enduring inspiration for RPI students and the next generation of engineers."

La Tasha Brown, Ph.D., director of community relations at RPI, who was awarded the William G. Pomeroy New York Historical Marker Grant in December 2024, reflected on the significance of the moment:

“This marker is more than a tribute—it’s a bridge between past and present, and a reminder of how deeply connected RPI is to the city of Troy, the Capital Region, and the communities we serve. In researching Garnet Baltimore’s life and putting together the proposal for the historical marker, I came to really appreciate just how ahead of his time he was. His story is one of perseverance, brilliance, and quiet impact. It’s been a real honor to help bring this recognition to life. This isn’t just about looking back—it’s about building on what he started and making sure our future reflects the values he stood for.”

This event will bring together RPI alumni, students, faculty, local leaders from Troy and Albany, and members of the wider community to celebrate a legacy that bridges past and future—highlighting Baltimore’s contributions and envisioning the next century of innovation emerging from Rensselaer. The celebration honors Baltimore’s profound contributions while reaffirming the RPI’s commitment to a strong, inclusive connection with Troy, Albany, and the broader region.
