Troy, N.Y. - Experts from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute's
Lally School of Management and Technology will examine the
stock market by industry and offer in-depth investment analysis
in a Wednesday, Oct. 1 seminar titled, "Will the Stock Market
Recover
and If So, When?"
The Lally School-sponsored event will be held from 3 to 5:30
p.m. in room 318 of Rensselaer's Darrin Communications Center.
It is free and open to the public.
"A number of factors - the current tumultuous international
situation in the Middle East and the continuing global
downturn, to name two-have made it difficult for some investors
to forecast and make decisions about the stock market," said
Denis Fred Simon, dean of the Lally School. "The faculty
members participating in our seminar have a vast amount of
experience with and knowledge of the stock market, and we are
confident that they will help attendees gain a deeper
understanding of what's in store for Wall Street.
Simon will moderate the event, which will begin with talks by
Pier A. Abetti, professor of management, and Bela Musits,
founder and managing director of High Peaks Venture Partners
LP. Abetti will explore "The Rise and Fall of the World's Most
Valuable Companies," and Musits will talk about "The Rise and
Fall of New Entrepreneurial Ventures."
Next, a panel of Lally School experts will discuss market
trends in specific industries:
Biotechnology and pharmaceuticals - Shreefal Mehta, research
assistant professor of management;
Information and communications - Greg Hughes, clinical
professor of management and former Lucent executive;
Media - Phil Phan, the Warren H. Bruggeman '46 and Pauline
Urban Bruggeman Distinguished Associate Professor of
Entrepreneurship;
Banking and financial services - Iftekhar Hasan, professor of
management; and
Professional and consulting services - Thiagarajan ("Ravi")
Ravichandran, associate professor of management.
Hugh Johnson, senior vice president and chief investment
officer for First Albany Corporation, will speak about "The
Perspective of Institutional Investors."
At the conclusion, Simon will poll the audience of students,
faculty, business leaders, and guests on their views of
industry trends and on their own market predictions.
