April 6, 2010
Following reports that an alleged armed suspect was seen
around Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute’s East Campus Athletic
Village and LINAC facilities during the morning of April 6,
Rensselaer employed its RPIAlert emergency communications
system to initiate a campus lockdown. The first message was
sent to all students, faculty, and staff in the Institute's
emergency communications network via email, text message, and
an automated phone call around 9:30 a.m.
Students, faculty, and staff were warned of the situation, and
advised to seek shelter indoors and lock their doors and
windows. The alert message was also posted front and center on
www.rpi.edu and on signage
throughout campus. Rensselaer also used its audible emergency
system to broadcast the alert via loudspeaker across the Troy
campus.
Rensselaer ended the alert shortly after noon.
Normal class schedules resumed at 2 p.m. Out of an abundance
of caution, we maintained an enhanced public safety presence on
campus and in student residential areas.
Our first priority is the safety and well-being of our
students, faculty, and staff.
