TROY, N.Y. — Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute has announced the appointment of Rensselaer Professor Prabhat Hajela, Ph.D., to the position of vice provost and dean of undergraduate education. Hajela, professor of mechanical, aerospace, and nuclear engineering, is internationally recognized for his significant achievements in engineering research and education, and his active service in leadership roles and professional societies.
“Dr. Prabhat Hajela is one of our most respected senior faculty members in technology and research. He brings academic and government experience to his new position. The appointment of Dr. Hajela will enrich Rensselaer’s commitment to undergraduate education,” said Rensselaer President Shirley Ann Jackson. “He will be influential in strengthening our programs, enhancing our diversity initiatives, and helping students use their innate capabilities of creativity and discovery to change the world.”
As a pioneer in interactive, hands-on education, Rensselaer is well-known for fostering an educational environment where students apply knowledge, interdisciplinary inquiry, and critical thinking to global challenges.
“Dr. Hajela will be instrumental in helping Rensselaer maintain its leadership position in the development of innovative educational pedagogies and the utilization of technology to create a more effective learning environment,” said Rensselaer Provost G.P. “Bud” Peterson, Ph.D. “He is highly respected by his colleagues and is committed to the well-being of the students and to Rensselaer’s academic programs.”
“In today’s world and at Rensselaer, students need to develop a strong grasp of the fundamentals related to their specific fields,” said Hajela. “They need to be aware of the geopolitical climate in which they will be performing and become comfortable in working in multicultural settings. I am excited to have this opportunity and look forward to working with my colleagues to further strengthen undergraduate programs.”
Hajela holds a bachelors of technology degree in aeronautical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology in Kanpur, India. He earned a master’s degree in aerospace engineering from Iowa State University, a master’s in mechanical engineering from Stanford University, and a doctorate in aeronautics and astronautics from Stanford University. He joined the Rensselaer faculty in 1990.
