Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Researchers To Produce State-of-the-Art Fishing Rod with Douglas Outdoors

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) has received a Jeff Lawrence Innovation Fund 2023 Manufacturing Grant in the amount of $50,000 to introduce unique innovations to the recreational fishing industry that may also be applied to commercial fishing through a collaboration with Douglas Outdoor LLC (DO). Daniel Walczyk, Ph.D., professor of mechanical engineering and director of the RPI’s Manufacturing Innovation Center (MIC), will serve as the principal investigator, and RPI students will benefit from research and employment opportunities.

U.S. Army Veteran and RPI alumnus Daryian Rhysing, who graduated in 2016 with a degree in computer and systems engineering, was featured in an episode of Veteran’s Playbook airing on Discovery Network’s Destination America Channel. The show seeks to inspire active military and veterans to consider business ownership as a viable path to success and fulfillment.

RPI Alumnus Sheldon Weinbaum ’59 Named Recipient of National Medal of Science

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute has announced that President Joe Biden has bestowed the National Medal of Science on globally recognized biomechanical engineer Sheldon Weinbaum, a member of the RPI Class of 1959. The award is the highest honor for scientific achievement bestowed by the United States government. The award recognizes individuals deserving of special recognition for their outstanding cumulative contributions to knowledge in the physical, biological, mathematical, engineering, or behavioral or social sciences, in service to the nation.

Run to Remember 5K: Honoring Heroes and Gold Star Families

On September 30, 48 participants gathered to run in the annual Run to Remember 5K hosted by Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute’s Detachment 550. The event, which took place in honor of our fallen heroes, served as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by those who serve our nation.

RPI To Host Boston Regional Inorganic Colloquium

From 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Saturday, October 28, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute will host the Boston Regional Inorganic Colloquium (BRIC) at the Shirley Ann Jackson, Ph.D. Center for Biotechnology and Interdisciplinary Studies. The first BRIC was held in 2004 to connect inorganic chemists in academia and industry and to promote community and collaboration. BRIC has since expanded beyond Boston to include all of New England.

Rensselaer Doctoral Student Wins Graduate Student Research Award

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute doctoral student Lucas Bowman Sutton has been selected as one of 60 recipients of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science Graduate Student Research (SCGSR) award. The SCGSR prepares graduate students for science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) careers that are critical to the DOE Office of Science mission. Thanks to the award, Sutton will spend 12 months at Oak Ridge National Laboratory conducting research on the circadian clock.

RPI Professor Wins Bio Leadership Fellowship

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute’s Mattheos Koffas, Ph.D., Dorothy and Fred Chau ʼ71 Constellation Professor in Biocatalysis and Metabolic Engineering, has won the inaugural June Wispelwey Bio Leadership Fellowship. The fellowship provides a grant “to assist scientists and engineers in spearheading projects that may lead to important technical, business, or community advancements in the biological engineering field.”
