RPI President Marty Schmidt, Ph.D., has announced that Kevin Surman, director of RPI’s Physical Plant, has been named a Pillar of Rensselaer

The Pillar Award, the highest award bestowed by RPI on a member of the staff, is presented annually to an individual who has demonstrated an understanding of the university’s mission and history, has served as a role model for other employees, shows concern for students and their welfare, and adds to the human dimension of RPI.

Candidates are nominated by fellow staff and faculty members, whose letters of support describe how the candidate’s attributes meet the criteria for the award.

“Over the course of his long career at RPI, Kevin has strengthened this campus in ways that touch the daily lives of our students, faculty, and staff,” said RPI President Martin A. Schmidt, Ph.D. “Having advanced through multiple leadership roles, Kevin has helped shape an environment where our community can learn, work, and thrive. His commitment reflects the spirit and values that define RPI, and I’m delighted to congratulate him on being named a Pillar of Rensselaer.”

Kevin has dedicated more than 32 years to RPI, beginning as an electrician and advancing through roles including electrical shop supervisor, associate director, and acting director. Known for his technical expertise, collaborative leadership, and steady guidance, Kevin has strengthened safety, improved operations, and supported the professional development of his team.

“I am truly grateful for all the opportunities given to me by my RPI family,” said Surman. “It would take a book to name all the amazing people who have mentored, encouraged, and supported me. Working at RPI has enabled me to grow and learn while supporting individuals whose work makes significant contributions and positively changes the world.  I am humbled by the kindness of those who nominated me for this award, and I am honored to be part of this exceptional Institution.”

The Pillar of Rensselaer Award was established in 1993 through the support of Carl Westerdahl, former dean of students and director of alumni relations.
