Rebecca W. Doerge Named Provost of RPI

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) today announced the appointment of Rebecca W. Doerge, Ph.D., as Provost, effective August 1, 2023. Doerge joins the Rensselaer community from Carnegie Mellon University, where she is the Glen de Vries Dean of the Mellon College of Science and a member of the Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences’ Department of Statistics and Data Science and the Mellon College of Science’s Department of Biological Sciences.

RPI Students Experiment with Music Performance for April 9 Concert

RPI’s Contemporary Improvisation Ensemble will host “Constellations” on April 9, a collaborative performance with student musicians and renowned artist Nick Dunston. The free concert will take place at 5 p.m. in the Theatre of the Curtis R. Priem Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center (EMPAC) on RPI’s campus.

RPI Chief of Public Safety Patricia Groeber: A Trailblazer for Women in Law Enforcement

Patricia Groeber, Chief of Public Safety at RPI, was recently featured in “Women in Law Enforcement: Trailblazing Troopers of the New York State Police,” a video highlighting women who helped reshape the profession, including some of the first to serve in the New York State Police (NYSP). In the video, Groeber reflects on being among the early female members of the NYSP, and the challenges she overcame rising through the ranks.

GameFest Returns to EMPAC on March 28

GameFest, RPI's annual celebration of innovation and creativity in game design, returns to the Curtis R. Priem Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center (EMPAC) on Saturday, March 28 from 12:00 PM to 7:00 PM. GameFest features a showcase and competition for student-made games, with cash prizes awarded by a panel of experts from the Capital Region games industry. 

RPI Ranks Among Nation's Top Universities for Patents

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) has been ranked 50th on the National Academy of Inventors' (NAI) 2025 Top 100 U.S. Universities Granted U.S. Utility Patents list, reaffirming the Institute's commitment to innovation and the translation of cutting-edge research into real-world impact. 

NROTC to Host Helicopter Landing on '86 Field

On Wednesday April 1 at 11:30 AM, RPI’s Naval Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (NROTC) will host the landing and display of a U.S. Marine Corps Bell UH-1Y Venom helicopter on ‘86 Field. Members of the campus community are invited to view the helicopter landing at 12 pm and meet the pilots until 2 pm. The community is also invited to observe take off between 3:30 - 4 pm.

RPI President Schmidt Appointed to DOE Advisory Committee

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) President Martin A. Schmidt ’81, Ph.D., has been appointed to the Department of Energy’s Office of Science Advisory Committee. The group of leaders from industry, academia, and national laboratories will support the Office of Science by providing independent, consensus advice regarding complex scientific and technical issues. 

EMPAC Presents staging grounds, February 20–28, 2026 A Festival of Time-Based Art and Re-Animated Memory

The Curtis R. Priem Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center (EMPAC) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute is pleased to announce staging grounds, a nine-day festival of installations, performances, and public programs exploring how culture is shaped by acts of return and re-animation. Taking place February 20–28, 2026, the festival brings together five international artists—Korakrit Arunanondchai, Jewyo Rhii, Na Mira, Samson Young, and Li Yi-Fan—whose practices illuminate how art restages experience across time.
