Emily Aaldenberg, a doctoral student in the Department of Materials
Science and Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, has been chosen to
receive the Norbert J. Kreidl Award for her contribution to understanding the
origins of fast-surface stress relaxation in glass.

The Norbert J. Kreidl
Award for Young Scholars
is awarded by the Glass & Optical Materials
Division of The American Ceramic Society, in recognition of excellence in glass
science research. Aaldenberg will present her award lecture in Boston in June
during the 25th International Congress on Glass.

Supervised by Minoru Tomozawa, professor of materials
science and engineering, Aaldenberg has integrated small angle X-ray scattering
with cross-over experiments to provide insight into the role of composition
fluctuations in glass mechanical strength and fatigue behavior.
