Joe Chow, an Institute Professor of Electrical, Computer, and Systems Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, is part of a team that is a recipient of the prestigious 2020 R&D 100 Awards. The world-renowned competition supports innovation and revolutionary ideas in science and technology.
Chow is a member of the CURENT Large Scale Testbed (LTB) for cyber-physical power grid simulation, which received a 2020 R&D Award in the software/services category. The CURENT LTB is a closed-loop software platform that can simulate modern power grids. It is part of the broader National Science Foundation and Department of Energy supported Center for Ultra-wide-area Resilient Electric Energy Transmission Networks (CURENT).
Chow is the campus director of CURENT at Rensselaer, where he furthers his research in modeling and control of large-scale power systems, synchronized phasor data applications, and control of renewable resources.
