Ge Wang, an endowed chair professor of biomedical engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, recently co-authored a review, published in Nature Machine Intelligence. In the piece, the team of researchers highlighted that big data can and should play a major role in the future development of deep tomographic imaging technologies. Wang was joined in this article by Jong Chul Ye, a professor of bio/brain engineering at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, and Bruno De Man, a technology manager at GE Global Research.

The authors wrote that, “We believe that this field has great utilities and new surprises to offer in the next five to 10 years,” they wrote. “For example, deep-learning-based reconstruction may enable new types of imaging modalities based on physical phenomena that have not been utilized before.” The researchers contend that artificial intelligence methodologies will significantly impact personalized and precision medicine.
