Vivek Ghosal, Ph.D., Virginia and Lloyd W. Rittenhouse Professor and Department Head of Economics at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, was an invited participant in ProMarket’s Big Tech-AI Investment Symposium.

The symposium brought prominent scholars and researchers from the fields of economics, law, and information science to discuss whether government intervention into investment by technology giants like Amazon, Google, and Microsoft would be likely to hamper competition and development among artificial intelligence startups.

Ghosal’s contribution explored the rationale behind the U.S. Federal Trade Commission’s investigations and considered both the market and technological capabilities underpinning AI to conclude that “there is little reason to believe that these Big Tech-AI startup partnerships are currently producing anticompetitive effects, and the government needs to be careful not to damage growth and prospects in this frontier technology.”

ProMarket is a forum meant to bridge the gap between academic journals and mainstream outlets, allowing space for discussion of important topics in economics, law, and policy. It is published by the George J. Stigler Center for the Study of the Economy and the State at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.

Ghosal’s article can be found here, and access to the complete symposium is available here.
