Space Shuttle Atlantis will next week carry a new Rensselaer nanomaterials experiment to the International Space Station. Samples of novel nanocomposite materials, seen in the photo, will be mounted to the hull of the space station, and tested to see how they weather the perils of space.

Heffner, '56, Chairman, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Board of Trustees, regarding President Shirley Ann Jackson’s Compensation: When the Board of Trustees began a search for a new President of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute over ten years ago, it was with the specific goal of finding a leader who would stabilize and revitalize this, the oldest technological research university in the country.
With $16.75 million in funding from the Army Research Laboratory (ARL), Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute will launch a new interdisciplinary research center devoted to the study of social and cognitive networks. The Center for Social and Cognitive Networks is part of the newly created Collaborative Technology Alliance (CTA) of the ARL, which includes a total of four nationwide centers focused on different aspects of the emerging field of network science.
