Two RPI researchers, Ge Wang, Ph.D., Clark & Crossan Endowed Chair Professor and director of the Biomedical Imaging Center at RPI, and Fudong Han, Ph.D., associate professor and Priti & Mukesh Chatter '82 Career Development Chair, have earned a spot on Clarivate’s 2025 Highly Cited Researchers list.

A distinction awarded only to 1 in 1,000 researchers worldwide, Clarivate’s Highly Cited Researchers are those who have authored papers that rank in the top 1% by citations for their field and publication year in the Web of Science over the past decade. The list recognizes individuals whose contributions have demonstrated “broad and significant influence in their fields.” This year it included around 7,000 researchers from 60 different countries/regions across 22 fields. The U.S. made up the largest share of the list, accounting for one-third of the honored researchers.

Wang and Han were recognized in the cross-field category, which honors individuals who have demonstrated influence and have Highly Cited Papers across numerous fields.

Wang, whose focus is biomedical imaging and AI-based imaging, is widely known for pioneering the cone-beam spiral CT method and for publishing the first perspective on AI-based tomographic imaging. He has also worked on interior tomography, bioluminescence tomography, and innovative photon-counting CT algorithms. His work has earned him honors including the IEEE EMBS Career Achievement Award, SPIE Meinel Technology Award, Sigma Xi Chubb Award for Innovation, RPI Wiley Distinguished Faculty Award, IEEE R1 Outstanding Teaching Award, IEEE NPSS/NMISC Hoffman Medical Imaging Scientist Award, 2024 IEEE TRPMS Best Paper Award, and AAPM Edith H. Quimby Award for Lifetime Achievement. With over 800 publications, Wang has been cited over 47,000 times.

“I am honored to represent RPI on the Highly Cited Researchers list,” said Wang. “What’s really meaningful is knowing that the work I have been doing has pushed other research forward, helped patients, and influenced the next generation.”

Han’s research is focused on materials development for advanced battery technologies. His work has earned him honors including the Materials Research Society Nelson “Buck” Robinson Science and Technology Award for Renewable Energy, ARPA-E IGNIITE Award, NSF CAREER Award, Electrochemical Society Electrodeposition Division Early Career Investigator Award, Electrochemical Society Battery Division Student Research Award, and Materials Research Society Graduate Student Gold Award. Han, who has been a Highly Cited Researcher since 2022, has published over 85 papers and has been cited over 20,000 times.

“The need for quality research from trustworthy sources is becoming increasingly important, as trust in research is at risk,” said Han. “Clarivate is a thorough evaluator, and to be included on their list is a true honor.”

As Highly Cited Researchers, Wang and Han demonstrate the kind of prestigious work being done by RPI faculty. Placing in the cross-field category, they also exemplify the interdisciplinary spirit of the Institute.
