Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute’s Lighting Research Center (LRC) welcomes the Swedish Energy Agency as the newest member of the LRC Partners Program, which is designed to coordinate efforts of public and private organizations to advance lighting research, education, and technology. Headquartered in Eskilstuna, the Swedish Energy Agency is a government organization focused on Sweden’s national energy policy issues and promoting the development of an energy infrastructure that is environmentally and economically sustainable. 

For many of us here at Rensselaer, December brings with it an onslaught of year-end reviews, top-10 lists, “best-of” compilations, and a host of other collections of newspaper, magazine, broadcast, and online articles that attempt to capture important events and accomplishments from 2010. If anything, the growing use of social media and the rapid expansion of the World Wide Web has accelerated the trend. Looking at these lists gave us pause, and led us to peer back at the year that was at Rensselaer.

The lab is equipped with five “Create” robots — essentially a Roomba robotic vacuum cleaner paired with a laptop; three hand-eye systems; one Chiara (which looks like a large metal crab); and 10 LEGO robots paired with the Sony Handy Board robotic controller.
