New NASA Research Consortium To Tackle Life’s Origins

Rensselaer is part of NASA’s new Prebiotic Chemistry and Early Earth Environments (PCE3) Consortium,one of five cross-divisional research coordination networks with the NASA Astrobiology Program. The PCE3 aims to identify planetary conditions that might give rise to life’s chemistry. 

Earth First Origins Project Seeks To Replicate the Cradle of Life

NASA’s Astrobiology Program has awarded a $9 million grant to Earth First Origins project, led by Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Assistant Professor Karyn Rogers, to uncover the conditions on early Earth that gave rise to life by identifying, replicating, and exploring how prebiotic molecules and chemical pathways could have formed under realistic early Earth conditions.

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Athletics and National Grid Foundation to Award “Rising Star” Trophies to Local Children

A unique partnership between Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Athletics and the National Grid Foundation is encouraging local students to aim high with their education. On Friday, February 15, the partners will honor local children from the Troy City School District at an annual “Shoot for the Stars” event. Top performing students will receive special “Rising Star” trophies.

Rensselaer To Host Exploring Engineering Day on February 9

Nearly 400 Capital Region elementary and middle school students will gather on the campus of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Saturday, February 9, to learn how a career in engineering can help them change the world.  At Exploring Engineering Day, young students in third through sixth grade will have the opportunity to learn from, and be inspired by, accomplished Rensselaer students. They will learn the importance of brainstorming, designing, building, testing, and working as a team through hands-on activities.

The ALSETLab at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute has received an award of $100,000 from Dominion Energy, a Virginia-based company, to support research on flexible alternating current transmission systems. Interdisciplinary Team Developing Virtual Reality Technology for Training and Assessment of Colorectal Surgeons

Colorectal surgery is a hands-on activity, but in recent years the effectiveness of traditional assessment methods in evaluating surgeons’ technical skills has been called into question. A team of collaborators with ties to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute is responding by pioneering the use of virtual reality technologies to train and objectively evaluate colorectal surgeons without putting any patients at risk.
