Commencement 2017: Service to Their Country

Troy, N.Y. – The Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) programs at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute are elective programs for students who desire commissions in the United States Armed Forces. This year, 33 students will be graduating from the ROTC program and starting active military service as officers with the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force.

Meet the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Class of 2017: An Overview of the 211th Commencement

Troy, N.Y. – This spring,1,841 students will receive degrees from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, the oldest technological research university in the United States, on Saturday, May 20, beginning at 8:15 a.m. in the East Campus Athletic Village (ECAV) stadium. They represent the next generation of leaders, engineers, scientists, entrepreneurs, patent holders, game designers, architects, and innovators, in fields ranging from engineering to architecture, fine arts to science, game design to information technology, and business to active military service.

Commencement 2017: The Ties That Bind

Troy, N.Y. — “Family is the most important thing to me,” said Khalil Drayton, who hails from Queens, New York. The oldest of seven children raised by a single mother, Drayton initially wanted to stay close to home when it came time to plan for college. It took some convincing from his mother, mentors, and teachers to get out of his comfort zone. Drayton said his experience at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute was well worth it.

Commencement 2017: A Passion for Research

Troy, N.Y. — Eva Mungai has a long-term goal. Born in Nairobi, Kenya, Mungai moved to the United States in 2005 with her family, who settled in Palo Alto, California. A desire to focus on undergraduate research led Mungai to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Mungai will receive a degree in mechanical engineering from Rensselaer during the 211th Commencement Ceremony May 20. Following graduation, she will head to the University of Michigan, where she plans to pursue her master’s and Ph.D.

Commencement 2017: Studious and Eager To Learn

Troy, N.Y. — In many cultures, name has meaning. Born in Xi’an, China, on a snowy day in February, Haoxue (Lily) Yan says that the literal translation of her first name means “white snow,” but it also means “studious and eager to learn.” Yan says that she always thought her parents were clever for coming up with that name.

The typical path for earning an architecture degree is five years of classes, studio work, and field experiences. Richard Abendroth, Class of 2017, took a somewhat different path—choosing to serve his country along the way.

Commencement 2017: Katelyn Fallows

Katelyn Fallows came to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute to study chemistry, believing it to be the most important science for achieving her goal. Four years later, she is graduating as a devotee of interdisciplinary collaboration, convinced through her experiences that it takes multiple vantage points to advance pharmaceutical innovation.
